Required Dietary Changes Or What Changes Can I Make in What and How I Eat?
First, understand that you don’t have to change your ways of eating forever. But you do have to give up some things for a while, maybe some of your favourite things, such as sweets and bread. Often, a yeast infection is entirely cured by cutting out all sweets. Changing your diet temporarily can often be the only thing you need to do to cure your stubborn yeast infection.
We can’t tell you how long you will need to stick to the changes in your eating habits, but you can count on at least six weeks. The actual length of time the cure is going to take depends on your body’s ability to recover and the strength of the infection. If you feel that your infection is weakening its hold on you and your body is more balanced, you can slowly re-introduce some of the banned foods. After you have beaten the infection, you should eat these “problem” foods or those that trigger your infections sparingly.
Foods to Avoid
SUGAR, SUGAR, and SUGAR!
Yeast loves sugar. You probably love sugar. “Friendly” bacteria and your immune system do not. Avoid sweets, cakes, cookies, pastries, and junk food (potato chips, sweetened drinks, and doughnuts). Do not be fooled by “natural sugars” such as fructose, sucrose, raw sugar, organic sugar, honey, or molasses. Sugar is sugar. A taste treat these things may be, but they provide no nutritional benefit to you. What they do most successfully is feed the Candida albicans overgrowth.
Avoid all forms of sugar and foods which contain them, such as:
Molasses and sugar syrups
_ Milk sugar (lactose) from milk products (yogurt, cheese, cream, milk)
_ Honey
_ Maple syrup
_ Sugar substitutes
_ Some canned food
_ Bakery goods (cake, candy, cookies, muffins, pies)
_ Alcoholic drinks
_ Fruit sugar from grapes, melons and other high sugar foods
_ Fruit juices and some vegetable juices
Fruit, Fruit Juices and Dried Fruit
You might get conflicting advice on the connection between fruit sugars and yeast. If your yeast problem is mild to moderate, it may be okay to eat one or two pieces of fruit a day. If your problem is severe, avoid fruit entirely because it is high in fruit sugar (fructose), and molds.
Bakers Yeast and Fermented Foods
Cut out bread, pizza, cakes, yeast spreads (such as Marmite), all malted products. Avoid pastries, buns, rolls, biscuits, crackers, soy sauce (an alternative is naturally fermented wheat-free tamari), mushrooms, stuffing mixes and anything breaded (chicken fingers, fish sticks, etc.). Don’t eat any nutritional supplement not labeled as yeast-free. Avoid miso, tempeh, nuts not in their shell (avoid peanuts altogether), smoked meats and processed meats, foods containing MSG (mono sodium glutamate) and cider.
Dairy Products
Milk contains lactose, which your body treats as a sugar. Cut out anything made from milk – ice cream, all forms of cheese (with the exception of soft goat’s cheese and non diary soy cheese), milk shakes, yogurt.
Alcohol
All alcohol lowers the immunity of your body system. Beer is especially bad because it is made primarily with yeast and has sugar. Wine is also fermented using yeast, and it may be high in sugar.
Refined Carbohydrates
Avoid white flour, white rice, and pasta (check the label for modified starch). The sugars in refined carbohydrates are fast acting, and they can cause sugar cravings. And there you go, feeding the Candida albicans overgrowth again instead of your own immune system.
Nicotine and Other Stimulants
Tobacco contains fungal residues, and it also robs the body of the oxygen which body cells require to fight the infection. Coffee and tea (even decaffeinated) have a negative effect on your adrenal glands. They put a strain on your immune system during a time when you want to give it all the support you can.
